THE GROUP had two really interesting evening meetings before Christmas, a visit to the museum and a talk by local business woman Helen, from All Mapped Out.
In November a small group had a fascinating evening hunting around in the museum for Mitchel Troy archives. With so much history to discover about the area one evening was not enough. There’s plenty to research such as the Duke of Beaufort, Troy House, local farms, village school, the battle of Owain Glyndwr 1404, the church of St Michaels, Troy Station, Lydart House and all the pubs and businesses, people and trades, all in this small area.
In December we enjoyed a festive social and a very interesting talk by Helen from Allmappedout. The company has a collection of over 20,000 historical UK Ordnance Survey maps dating from the beginning of the 19th century to the 1930's.
They offer reproduction as well as sales of original maps. |
Whilst trying not to spill wine on the old maps of the area, we found out the exact location of Owain Glyndwr’s famous battle on Craig-y-Dorth and the history about the old road which passed through Lydart house area plus many other fascinating facts. Did you know that Lydart was on the pilgrimage route from Tintern to St David’s so it would have been an important stopping point? In fact the reputation of one Lydart inn caused the road to be moved to discourage people from stopping there. For more information look at www.allmappedout.com or phone 860085 or 860521.
