| THE PATHS GROUP plan local walks to enjoy in the company of like minded people. |
 |
If you like to go out for a gentle stroll from your own front door but fear thick undergrowth or enormous stiles or if you have visitors who would like to walk without using the car, then the Mitchel Troy Paths Group is for you!
Our aim is to share local knowledge of paths so that Mitchel Troy residents, (and their visitors) can better enjoy the beautiful countryside around their homes. Our first meeting was held on 3 September, with Val and Geoff Long, Jim Dagliesh, Mark Griffith, Rosey Ringer and Elaine Savage poring over local maps old and new, large and small, to explore what we know about the local rights of way.
We will focus on two projects.
First to propose to the AONB an abbreviated version of one of the Mitchel Troy Circular walks for inclusion in their new edition of the ‘Walk this Wye’ brochure. We felt that the magnificent views from Craig-y-dorth deserved recognition by a wider audience.
|
At our next meeting we were joined by Frances Chamberlain, to discuss the reports from Jim and the Longs on the state of the proposed route. They walked it and noted where attention was needed.
Our other project is for each of us to walk a path near to our homes, with a view to writing it up and sharing our knowledge in the newsletter, the website and through our contacts list. Eventually, we may even start to produce a series of leaflets for the visitors at Rosey’s Church Farm Guesthouse and at the Glen Trothy camp-site.
If you know about the Mitchel Troy paths and would like to join us in sharing your knowledge or find out more, then please telephone Elaine Savage on 01600 715618 email elainesavage236

Mitchel Troy to Millbrook Garden Centre
This is a linear path leading from Parc Pentre, Mitchel Troy, to the Garden Centre, with pleasant views of the Trothy valley towards Monmouth. It can be turned into a circular walk by returning along the main road.
At just under a mile long, it is quite easy except for the eleven stiles, some of which are not dog-friendly. If you do walk with a dog, please be aware that there are sheep (some already with lambs) in the fields and dogs should therefore be on leads and kept strictly under control. Please follow the Country Code – a copy can be found on the Mitchel Troy Community Group web-site
The walk starts at the footpath between numbers 2 and 3 Parc Pentre. Follow the sunken lane alongside No.3’s garden fence up to the stile into a field. With the hedge now on your left, continue up the field to a waymark post where four paths meet. Turn left and go over the stile into a triangular field. Follow the waymark diagonally across to the top corner of Longstone Wood and go over the stile into the field above the wood. This wood is the site of a long disused quarry and hangs steeply above the main road.
Continue with the fence on your left and cross a stile with a high step into a large field, which often has livestock in it. The fence is now on your right. Follow this to the three stiles that take you across the track up to Longstone Farm and Cottages. Once across the track keep the fence on your right to the next stile. Follow the waymark pointing towards the wooden pole in the middle of the field from where you can see the stile in the middle of the wire fence.
From this stile, head towards the small building next to the first of two ponds. Look out for a magnificent black swan and some geese on the pond. Go between the two ponds, the second pond is in the garden of Broomfield, and over the stile into the last field. With the hedge boundary of Broomfield on your left, go down to the last stile by the finger post on the main road opposite the entrance to Millbrook Garden Centre. Cross with care for a welcome cup of tea.
